YouTube has launched a new Chinese language site designed specifically for Taiwan. In addition to user-generated content, the site features video from local media partners, including China Television Co., Sanlih E-Television Co., Lion Travel Service Co. and Taiwan Broadcasting System.
According to reports, Taiwan has been encouraging users to upload videos to YouTube (previously through the English version) to promote goodwill for the country, which has often been at odds with China.
Could today’s launch be the reason we earlier received reports that YouTube is currently being blocked in China? It would make sense given the tense political climate between the two countries, and China has become notorious for blocking websites.

Subject: Wikis-meet-YouTube: Kaltura Launches and wins TechCruch40's People's Choice Award
Dear friends,
i'm happy to report that Kaltura has launched, allowing groups of users for the first time to do with video, audio, and animation what wiki platforms enable them to do with text. check it out at: http://www.kaltura.com
I'm even happier to report that we're seeing early signs of success already. competing against 99 other companies, we have won the TC40 people's choice award on our first day out, and we're getting lot's of coverage. http://www.kaltura.com/index.php/static/news and see our press release below.
I encourage you to sign up for kaltura, if you have not done so already, produce a few collaborative group videos, invite your friends to upload clips, remix it all up, and share it with the world. it's fun and free, and it's really the next step in user-generated-content. we're also always looking for cool ideas, and for partnerships with individuals and companies that can make innovative use of our platform. if you have some ideas, send them my way. I want to thank all the people that had given us such valuable feedback during the closed beta testing. further thoughts and comments are always welcome,
cheers,
shay.

new to vimeo
So, I visited vimeo's site last night and it knew I was new and told me so. You guys probably got the same screen. I got a screen shot of it - it was quite a direct way of targeting a new user, I thought. I poked around and there seem to be a lot of artsy people on it. It was sort of inspiring, but I also got the feeling it wouldn't appeal to a wider audience. Looked like it was really for 20-something hipsters!
We'll see ... just thought I'd get my thoughts down now before I get to know the site better and my views change.
